Hiya Streamer beamers!
I hope everyone had a good weekend... I have been here very little over the last few days but I am checking in to share my latest craze...
I have become a "county highpointer"!
*fanfare*
Now... I can sense the collective "Huh? What in the world has he gotten into NOW?"
That's ok. I'll explain... there is an organization of geography nuts like myself who have a website that tells all about their pursuit of reaching the highest elevation in every single county in the United States.... that's ALOT of counties.... the site breaks the whole thing down by counties and there are "reports" given of when and how that particular county was bagged... and there are firm rules about how it is to be done....and there are lots of issues like property rights, savage dogs (always the dogs, I tells ya!), impassable underbrush, loose crumbly and dangerous paths, and bad maps to deal with... one has to PROVE they were there to some extent... but if you are not the first one to bag a county then you COULD cheat, but hell, who would even waste their time doing that in such a rediculous esoteric hobby such as this?
I bagged my first county after work on Saturday night...my home county in Alabama... I didnt have my map or my info from online but I had studied up on where to go to such an extent that I didnt need any of that... the place I had to go was on government land and off limits to the public for nearly a 100 years but had been opened back up as a wildlife preserve in the last year or so... so I took my Honda up and up and up and over bumpy roads into the mountains and I went to the exact place I needed to be...then a short scramble up some lichen covered rocks and.. bingo!..I broke my highpointing cherry...so to speak!
It was great in a way that only a guy like me who reads road atlases on the toilet can fully appreciate.... now, I have 60 something more counties in this state to bag and I will be getting somewhere in life. I have all my maps and other materials ready to go and will hopefully get this little mission completed over the next couple of years.
So, yes... I'm a dork, but apparently I have found some kindred souls out there who are in to the same weird things I am in to.
Life is grand, aint it?
