Life After The Hollow

 That Danged Dog!!!!!

Long time readers of the Hollow might remember a time last Summer when I was bitching about the neighbors crazy puppy that would come over and tear the whole place up and run off with tools and yard stuff. Five-o? Arch enemy of the docile Snowball?

Anyhoos..... Well, this puppy has become HUGE! They keep him chained up most days, but he is back here at Secret's house today and has been a pain in the rear! (This is right on the "heels" of me stepping in his poop, barefooted a couple of days ago. Pun not intended) He's been dragging crap into the pouring rain and he has eaten a variety of things like ciggys and a lighter and bags of trash and then for his final masterpiece, he took a bag of mulch and destroyed it right at the bottom of the stairs in front of the cars. It's friggin pouring down rain too, so there's no way to sweep it out right now. PLUS, the dog is STILL here and the owner has left.

Here he is beaming in front of the destroyed mulch bag, from today.

Happy New Year, Five-O.

 Saturday Grab Bag!

Hi.

Ok. Since I got a few undeveloped ideas, I will just offer my new improved Saturday Grab Bag where I can just throw out half baked ideas or whatnot, that didn't quite muster up to a full blog potential.

So, here goes....

1. Remember kids, "Today", is yesterday's "Tomorrow". So, I am going to stop procrastinating. ....sometime tomorrow, perhaps.

2. Here are some pics I took in the Hollow yesterday.

3. Please, don't drink and drive this weekend, folks.

Thank You.

 An Epiphany .........revisited

A family friend called my sister tonight to say her dad had passed away....and so, my sister called me to give me the sad news...

Brought back alot of memories about the year I lost my Dad....1995.

I originally wrote the following post on another site back in 2004, but I wanted to repost it with all the thoughts of my Dad tonight..... My somewhat bitter angle towards my Dad has softened somewhat over the last couple of years, but I feel this writing honors him...

So, from 2004....

I kind of had an epiphany about my relationship with my dad a couple of nights ago.

I guess some background is in order. My dad and I weren't very close when I was growing up. I'm the youngest of 3 children. He was a busy salesman and he traveled alot. He was also an alcoholic and had a somewhat demanding wife (My sainted mother!) and two other kids to raise. He was overwhelmed and I, being the quiet child, was left without a strong father presence in my life. I felt like I was his biggest disappointment in my attempts to please him and get his attention. I only have a few memories of he and I spending time together my whole childhood. Only when I returned from college did we start hanging out, drinking beer and watching baseball. He passed away suddenly in 1995 and I was left with our relationship unfulfilled from what I always dreamed it would be.

So two nights ago, I'm laying in bed in my insomnia induced half awake, half asleep state, listening to my favorite 70's radio station. This song came on by Roberta Flack called "The closer I get to you." The only importance of this song is that it played over a grocery store radio in 1990 when he and I were shopping for groceries after I had been in a very bad car accident. He pushed the cart and I hobbled behind him in my injured state. I truly felt loved and important to him that night.

Thinking of that triggered another memory that had long been forgotten. I was about 5 years old and I couldn't sleep. (Then too!) He stayed up with me half the night playing Simon and Garfunkel albums and just holding me and rocking me. What a wonderful father he was to me that night, so long ago. It brought a weary smile to my face as I lay there the other night.

I spent so much of my youth vowing to never be like my dad, but in the end, I became just like him--I'm a busy salesman who has battled addiction in the past and I certainly neglected my wife and son when we were still together. But I have challenged myself that my boy will never, ever feel neglected by me and that he could never be a disappointment, only my greatest joy.

Maybe I'm becoming the kind of father my dad would have truly expected of himself, and of his children to their children. I hope that where ever Dad is now, he's smiling proudly of his quiet, youngest son.

I love you, Dad.
