I know that some of you really enjoy the yard and critter blogs so I am putting on my powdered wig and ruffles this morning to deliver....
The State Of The Yard Address!
Well, we got a little rain last week but it was just a spit in the Saharan desert compared to what we need. The grass is looking worse by the day and some of the trees are either dead as door nails or have just decided to have all their leaves turn brown and fall to earth. I'm no tree expert but I think they died.
We lost an azalea bush in the front bed and yanked it, but Secret went and bought some lovely new plants and flowers to put in the bed, which I hope we will do this morning.
The bunnies Jabez, Solomon, and Maggie are still here, but they all look like they are hurting from the drought too. They just don't look fit.
Most of the bird action is still those facist cardinals and the much more well behaved woodpeckers.
Now, we have had a large group of doves move in to the yard in the last week or so, and they are a welcome addition. They spook very easily however and they take to the air with a perturbed fluttering of the wings which makes quite a racket and makes the other birds nervous. Y'all just chill! We're COOL! Just ask the other birds!
The finches are here in larger numbers all the time and the hummingbirds have finally come to stay.
There are 3 blackbirds now and they come early in the morning to do their raiding. We find bits of feathers in piles around the yard where they have dined on whatever poor bird they catch and eat.
There is a solitary little bird that is the most amazing beautiful blue I have ever seen on a bird around here. It's almost turquoise in it's radiance! I wonder if it's not some tropical escapee. It just seems too colorful to be native. It sticks out like a gorgeously painted sore thumb when it drops by, which is only a few times a week.
Ok. The squirrels are still here. They make the main feeder area look like a Jihad attack took place when they are done eating. We are done fretting about them. They STILL chew through the lines holding some of the feeders and they basically cannot enjoy a meal without tearing the place up to holy hades, but wadda we s'posed to do? Secret threw out some moth balls and I'm sure that was a real kneeslapper to them.
*shrug*
The bats are still here every night and with the little rain we got, the frogs have returned but not in the numbers we are used to. I suppose they are hanging down at the bog just across the road to be closer to the water.
The blackberries are still ripening nicely so look for some crazy messed up pie story from me soon. Hopefully no flames will be part of the tale.
That's the state of the yard for now.
Not much new going on.
Please send rain if you are hoarding any!
Now, let me take this stupid powdered wig off before the kids get up and I get lambasted all day!
Sincerely,
The Yard Czar
